UNISMA Students Help Farmers Develop Local Livestock

Faiqul Mubarok, a student in Master’s Program in Animal Science at Universitas Islam Malang, conducted an extension session for farmers in Petungpapak Hamlet, Sukodadi Village, Wagir Subdistrict, Malang Regency on January 4, 2023. This extension activity is part of a new initiative implemented to assist smallholder farmers in remote areas.

The training session, led by the Unisma student—often called Faiq—focused on production management for Jawarandu goats. The Jawarandu goat is a local breed resulting from a cross between the Ettawa and Kacang goats, which are widely utilized as .

This topic was chosen to boost the productivity of local livestock, particularly Jawarandu goats. “We must develop indigenous Indonesian livestock like the Jawarandu goat by providing farmers with more information so that local livestock productivity is optimized and their growth is on par with non-local breeds,” added Faiq.

The extension program organized by Unisma master’s students was enthusiastically received by farmers, as many Jawarandu goat farmers in Petungpapak Hamlet, Sukodadi Village, and surrounding areas have only recently started raising goats. “We express our gratitude for holding such an extension program; we really need this,” said Dedik, one of the Jawarandu goat farmers
