2 students in Master’s Program in Indonesian Language Education (MPBI) at Universitas Islam Malang graduated without writing a thesis. These students were granted graduation without a thesis in recognition of their successful publication of scientific articles in a Sinta 2-accredited journal.
The two students are Yuanita Widiastuti and Oktavia Winda Lestari. Yuanita Widiastuti led the publication in KEMBARA: Journal of Language, Literature, and Teaching (e-Journal). Yuanita wrote an article titled “Preferences for Literary Reading Media Among Students at SMAN 1 Kraksaan: Print or Digital?”. Yuanita was assisted by her colleague, Oktavia Winda Lestari, as the second author, and Dr. Ari Ambarwati, M.Pd., who supervised the writing of this scientific paper.
In addition to serving as the second author, Oktavia also served as the first author on a publication in *Eralingua: Journal of Foreign Education and Literature* titled “Lexicon in the Tradition of Kuih Ashura in the Malay Society of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand: An Ethnolinguistic Study.” Oktavia was also assisted by Yuanita Widiastuti as the second author, Prof. M. Jazeri, M.Pd as the third author, and Dr. Hasan Busri, M.Pd as the fourth author.
Rector’s Decree on Recognition of Student Scientific Journals
Students whose papers have been published are no longer required to write a thesis, in accordance with the Rector’s Decree of the Islamic University of Malang No. 585/G152/U.AK/L.16/XII/2019. The Rector’s Decree for these master’s students states:
“If a student can publish at least two research findings or scientific papers in a Sinta 1 or 2-indexed national journal before registering for their thesis, they will be exempt from the thesis completion process. The thesis grade will be converted from these scientific papers to an A.”

A student’s success in graduating without a thesis is the result of persistent effort and determination in writing. Additionally, scientific publications are the result of a process and patience in following the guidance and supervision of faculty members.
This award is intended to provide students with experience and expertise in the field of publication. Success in this area is also needed by higher education institutions to support program accreditation, as it will improve the institution’s rating. (IS/AL/PPS)
