Program Excellence

The Postgraduate program is supported by professional lecturers and academic staff with national reputations. Its academic orientation in education, research and community engagement is firmly grounded in applied science. The educational approach emphasizes not only the quality of academic processes and infrastructure but also graduate outcomes and societal impact.

Each study program possesses distinct specializations that reflect its academic strengths. For example, the Multicultural Doctoral Program is designed as a benchmark for addressing socio-religious disharmony in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the Master’s Program in Notarial Studies prepares graduates to become experts in land law, land administration and professional notarial practice, including the management of land and government assets.

The academic structure is organized through Core Course Groups (Kelompok Mata Kuliah/KMK), consisting of Basic Expertise Courses, General Foundation Courses, Compulsory Concentration Courses, Elective or Matriculation Courses, Thesis and Supporting Courses. Instruction is delivered through lectures, seminars and case studies over three semesters for master’s programs and five semesters for doctoral programs, followed by thesis writing for one to two semesters and dissertation preparation alongside field research. Students may select specializations aligned with their academic interests and career objectives, supported by dedicated supervision from subject-matter experts.

Academic Facilities

Academic facilities include a seminar hall comparable to a four-star hotel ballroom located on the 7th floor of the Postgraduate Building, academic counseling rooms, professors’ offices, a language laboratory, micro-teaching laboratory, computer and IT center, library, internet center, entrepreneurship center, function room for postgraduate students, and lecturers’ seminar rooms. Each classroom is equipped with integrated LCD monitors and connected to the university’s central academic service system.

Institutional Partnerships

One of the key strengths of UNISMA Postgraduate School is its extensive international collaboration. This is evidenced by its involvement in the Global Summit of University Leaders, held in various countries, including 2019 when UNISMA served as the host institution. The university has established partnerships with multiple government ministries, including the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Religious Affairs, and the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education, as well as other state institutions.

UNISMA Malang has also developed cooperation with leading universities across Asia, Europe and the Americas. Several postgraduate lecturers are alumni of prominent universities in Australia. In addition, UNISMA serves as the host institution for the East Java Provincial Scholarship Program for Madrasah Diniyah teachers pursuing master’s degrees and functions as a training and human resource development center for regional and provincial governments in East Java.

Study Period and Academic Schedule

For master’s programs, students are required to complete 36 – 45 credit units. Face-to-face instruction is conducted over four effective terms, equivalent to four semesters, including the final term dedicated to thesis preparation. Tutorial sessions are held on working days according to the semester credit system. Academic regulations and procedures are outlined in the UNISMA Postgraduate Academic Handbook.

For doctoral programs, credit requirements and study duration follow regulations set by the Directorate of Islamic Higher Education and the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education, with an estimated completion period of six to eight semesters.
