Indonesian Navy Officer Becomes UNISMA’s 69th Doctor of Multicultural Islamic Education

Muhammad Syukur, Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) officer, has become UNISMA’s 69th Doctor of Multicultural Islamic Education. The doctoral candidate officially earned his doctorate after successfully defending his dissertation in an open examination on April 25, 2022.

Muhammad Syukur conducted research on the implementation of Multicultural Islamic Religious Education carried out at the Naval Academy (AAL). The study was conducted at the AAL located in Bumimoro, Surabaya.

Promovendus used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological model in conducting his research. His data sources included primary and secondary data. Primary data was obtained from interviews, textbooks, syllabi, and educational curricula. Meanwhile, secondary data came from books, articles, and previous research journals.

According to Syukur, the values of Islamic Religious Education developed at AAL are based on three main concepts: (1) akhlak as attitude control, (2) tolerance in diversity, and (3) ukhuwah as the foundation of human emancipation.

The examination panel was led by the Rector of the Islamic University of Malang, Prof. Dr. Maskuri, M.Si, assisted by the secretary, Prof. M. Mas’ud Said, MM., Ph.D. Other members of the examination panel included: Prof. Dr. Imam Suprayogo, Prof. Junaidi Mistar, M.Pd., Ph.D., Prof. Dr. Yaqub Cikusin, M.Si., Prof. Dr. Djunaidi Ghony, and Dr. H. M. Hanief, M.Pd.

Muhammad Syukur was accompanied by his colleagues from AAL Surabaya. A total of nine instructors were present during the examination, in addition to his wife. Muhammad Syukur passed with a satisfactory grade and was authorized to use the doctoral title following revisions and the graduation ceremony.

Syukur stated that studying at Unisma was a unique challenge. However, he emphasized that challenges must be embraced with a positive attitude. He expressed his gratitude to Unisma’s faculty for their guidance and asked for prayers so he can continue to improve in the future.

Prior to this open defense, Triana Rosalina Noor’s defense was held behind closed doors. Triana’s dissertation is titled “Multicultural Islamic Religious Education in Fostering the Spirit of Resilience Among the Elderly at Griya Werda Jambangan in Surabaya.” Hopefully, she will soon follow suit and hold her open defense.
