Universitas Islam Malang’s Postgraduate Program held a fresh briefing on academic policy for its Doctoral Program in Islamic Education (PAI) on February 27, 2021, via Zoom.
The session was moderated by Dwi Ari Kurniawati, M.H, opening with Unisma’s customary welcome, followed by remarks from Rector Prof. Dr. H. Maskuri, M.Si, an explanation from Postgraduate Director Prof. Mas’ud Said, MM., PhD, and further clarification from Study Program Head Prof. Dr. Djunaidi Ghony.

The Postgraduate Director confirmed that the standard timeline for completing the doctoral program on schedule is three years (six semesters), with a maximum allowable period of seven years (14 semesters). To help students graduate on time, he emphasized the need for strategic steps toward timely study completion.
One such measure allows students to substitute their dissertation with a publication in a reputable international journal, in accordance with Rector’s Decree No. 85/G152/U.AK/R/XII/2019.
“Students who succeed in publishing their research findings or scholarly work in a reputable international journal are granted exemption from the closed dissertation examination, automatically receiving an “A” grade”.

This academic policy is designed to boost student achievement, scholarly output, and creativity, particularly in publishing research in reputable national or international journals. It also serves to recognize and reward students who demonstrate strong performance in scholarly publication.
However, the open examination remains mandatory, requiring students to formally defend the content of their published work. (AL/PPS)
