Malang, October 12, 2024 – 5 international students took part in the New Student Campus Life Orientation (OSHIKA MABA) at the postgraduate University of Islam Malang (UNISMA) on Saturday. OSHIKA MABA is an annual program after the university entrance, the students come from two countries, Uzbekistan and Timor-Leste. The orientation program was held at the Abdurrahman Wahid Hall on the seventh floor of the Ali bin Abi Tholib building on October 12. It aims to introduce new postgraduate students to academic life, campus facilities and social life in Indonesia.

Two students from Uzbekistan, Egamberdieva Mohlaroyin and Sultanova Sevara, are enrolled in the Master’s program in English Language Education. Both are alumni of international student exchange programs and have chosen to continue their higher education at UNISMA.

Meanwhile, three students from Timor-Leste are pursuing postgraduate studies in two different programs. Denilson Pereira Lay is enrolled in the Master’s program in Management, while Domingis Correia Tavares and Anastacio Mendonca are studying for a Master’s degree in Law.

Sevara said her decision to study at UNISMA was influenced by her previous academic experience in Indonesia.

“Why I chose UNISMA is because I’ve been in Indonesia before, and I like the educational system, the teachers and others. I really like Indonesia and Indonesian people,” she said.

Egamberdieva Mohlaroyin, who is also known by her nickname Alya, expressed a similar view, citing both cultural and academic reasons.

“The reason why I chose UNISMA is that I have always intended to be close to Indonesian traditions. I have also received information about the high quality of education at UNISMA, and this encouraged me to continue my studies here,” she said.

Through the OSHIKA MABA program, the international students are expected to integrate more easily into UNISMA’s academic and social environment. The program includes campus orientation sessions, an introduction to the academic system and guidance on daily life in Indonesia.

The presence of international students is also seen as part of the university’s broader efforts to strengthen the internationalisation of postgraduate education and to build closer academic ties with students’ home countries.
