Ketua Yayasan UNISMA Prof Agus Sugiyanto

UNISMA Foundation chair, Prof. Dr. Agus Sugiyanto, M.P., underscored the deeper significance behind the graduation ceremony for prospective graduates. Speaking at the farewell event for postgraduate candidates held at Hotel Atria on the eve of the graduation procession (Feb. 21), Prof. Agus drew attention to key elements of the ceremony, notably the academic gown and the ritual shifting of the tassel.

The senior professor of the Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Islam Malang explained that the academic gown is more than ceremonial attire; it symbolizes scholarly distinction, reflecting both achievement and the responsibilities borne by graduates.

Meanwhile, the shifting of the tassel from left to right signifies the transformation of students from knowledge seekers into individuals prepared to apply their learning and contribute to society. “When the rector moves the tassel from left to right, it marks the transition from learner to professional,” said the professor, who is also a specialist in mushroom cultivation.

He expressed hope that the message would serve as a lasting reminder for graduates to uphold integrity, continue advancing their knowledge, and bring tangible benefits to their communities. “Graduation is not the end of the journey, but the beginning of a new responsibility to apply knowledge for the nation’s progress,” Prof. Agus said.
