Boosting Ruminant Livestock Productivity Through Breeding Technology and Genetics

Prof. Dr. Mudawamah, M.Si delivered a scientific oration titled “Enhancing Ruminant Livestock Productivity Through the Implementation of Sustainable Breeding Technology and Genetic Science.” She emphasized that breeding technology and genetics could serve as key pillars in meeting the community’s protein needs.

Protein derived from ruminants plays a crucial role in human neurological development and cognitive improvement. Adequate intake of animal protein also contributes to building a robust immune system that protects against various diseases.

To support protein supply from ruminants, advanced livestock breeding technologies are required, including open nucleus breeding systems supported by applicable software. Increasing livestock production demands contributions from all stakeholders, ranging from government institutions to small-scale farmers.

Prof. Mudawamah advocates for breeding strategies that empower smallholder farmers by identifying livestock with the potential for twin or triplet births. This potential can be assessed through genetic and molecular data analysis. Such approaches are expected to increase ruminant production and make animal protein more accessible to the wider population.
