Prof. Said Agil Husin Al-Munawar Delivers Guest Lecture at UNISMA Postgraduate School on Qur’anic Verses and Science

MalangSaid Agil Husin Al-Munawar delivered a guest lecture titled “Reinterpreting the Kauniyah Verses in Science and Technology” before students of Universitas Islam Malang. The event was held at the Usman Bin Affan Building, 7th floor, on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

The lecture was officially opened by the Director of UNISMA Postgraduate School, Prof. H. Mas’ud Said, M.M., Ph.D., who expressed appreciation for the distinguished scholar’s presence and conveyed hope that students would benefit from his insights.

“Malang feels especially bright today with the presence of Prof. Said Agil Husin Al-Munawar, who has generously shared his knowledge with our postgraduate students. This theme is highly relevant to contemporary developments, as we are challenged to continuously explore the deeper meanings of Qur’anic verses related to the universe,” Prof. Mas’ud Said remarked.

UNISMA Rector Prof. H. Junaidi, M.Pd., Ph.D., noted that Prof. Said Agil Husin Al-Munawar is no stranger to the university.

“Prof. Said Agil Husin Al-Munawar is a national figure who played a pivotal role in establishing UNISMA’s Postgraduate Program, alongside Prof. Said Agil Siradj as Director at the time. His return to UNISMA is akin to revisiting a former home,” Prof. Junaidi said.

In his presentation, Prof. Said Agil Husin Al-Munawar emphasized the importance of reinterpreting the kauniyah verses Qur’anic verses concerning the natural world in a contemporary context. He argued that the Qur’an is not merely a source of spiritual guidance, but also contains scientific indications that can be further developed in the fields of science and technology.

“The Qur’an is a source of knowledge, but it is not a textbook of science,” said the professor of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.

The event was attended by master’s and doctoral students, particularly from the Doctoral Program in Islamic Religiou Education (PAI), Master’s Program in Islamic Religious Education (PAI), and Master’s Program in Islamic Family Law. Several undergraduate students and lecturers from various faculties were also present. Participants showed strong enthusiasm, actively engaging in the discussion and question-and-answer session.

The guest lecture forms part of UNISMA Postgraduate School’s ongoing efforts to enhance academic quality and broaden students’ intellectual horizons. Similar initiatives are expected to continue, featuring other distinguished scholars in the future.
