Malang, November 18, 2023 – Universitas Islam Malang proudly appointed Prof. (H.C UNISMA) Dr. H. Ali Masykur Musa, M.Si., M.Hum as a Full Professor in the field of Islamic Education Politics. Known affectionately as “Cak Ali,” he has a long history of service in the fields of education and politics in Indonesia.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by guests from various sectors, including: Prabowo Subianto (Indonesian Minister of Defense), Khofifah Indar Parawansa (Governor of East Java), regional leaders of the Nahdlatul Ulama Scholars Association (ISNU) from across Indonesia and branch leaders of ISNU from across East Java, as well as scholars from various universities in Malang.
The event, held on the Ali bin Abi Tholib Floor of UNISMA’s building, was also attended by acting mayors and regents from the Greater Malang area. The ceremony proceeded solemnly from start to finish and was also attended by Prof. Dr. Dyah Sawitri, S.E., M.M., Head of the Higher Education Coordination Agency (LLDIKTI) Region 7.

Cak Ali is the chairman of the ISNU Central Board (Ikatan Sarjana Nahdlatul Ulama) and has played a significant role in the development of scholars and intellectuals within the NU (Nahdlatul Ulama) community. An NU activist since his youth, his track record in various social organizations is unquestionable. He has served as Chairman of Jember Branch of PMII, Vice Chairman of GP Anshor Jember Branch, Chairman of PB PMII, Chairman of GM KOSGORO, Chairman of DPP KNPI, and Head of Economic Affairs Department at PB NU.
His academic career began as a political science lecturer at University of Jember, before he entered the world of politics. Cak Ali was elected as a member of the House of Representatives (DPR) from the National Awakening Party (PKB) for two terms, namely 1999–2004 and 2004–2009. During his time in the DPR, he held several strategic roles, including serving as Chairman of the PKB Faction in DPR and Vice Chairman of Commission XI (Banking and Financial Institutions) of the DPR. His career also included serving as Vice Chairman of Commission IX (Development Planning and State-Owned Enterprises) of DPR and as a Member of the Legislative Body (Baleg) of DPR.

Cak Ali also served as Chairman of PKB elected at the 2008 Bogor Congress, chosen by acclamation at PKB Extraordinary Congress (MLB). Additionally, he was nominated as a vice presidential candidate in 2008 when Bang Sutiyoso ran for president under Partai Indonesia Sejahtera (PIS) and participated in the 2014 Democratic Party presidential candidate convention.
The Rector of Universitas Islam Malang, Prof. Dr. H. Maskuri, M.Si., expressed his pride in Cak Ali’s achievements. Cak Ali’s appointment as a Full Professor in the field of Islamic Political Education is expected to make a significant contribution to the development of Islamic knowledge and education in Indonesia.
