Postgraduate Student Trains Local Sheep Farmers in Mineral Block Production

Postgraduate student in Animal Husbandry, Nur Faizzatul Ismiah, conducted a community outreach programme focusing on Mineral Block Training for local sheep farmers in Balung Lor Village, Jember Regency, on Sunday. The activity was part of the Kandidat Magister Mengabdi (KMM) Community Service Program. The program was designed to improve farmers’ knowledge and skills in providing nutritious supplementary feed for sheep. Mineral blocks are an essential feed supplement that supports livestock growth and overall animal health.

During the training, members of the Balung Serut Livestock local Farmers Group received practical and theoretical guidance on the importance of minerals in animal feed. The session covered the materials required to produce mineral block, as well as proper and efficient production techniques. Participants showed strong enthusiasm throughout the program, actively engaging in both classroom explanations and hands-on practice.

One of the participants, Rohman, welcomed the initiative, saying the training addressed a long-standing challenge faced by local farmers.

“This program is very beneficial for us as farmers. We have long struggled to provide additional mineral supplements for our sheep. Through this training, we can now produce mineral blocks ourselves at a more affordable cost,” he said.

The Kandidat Magister Mengabdi (KMM) Community Service Program at Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA) is designed as a form of higher education’s contribution to community empowerment. Through community service initiatives such as this, the university aims to create a positive impact on livestock productivity in Balung Lor and surrounding areas.

Nur Faizzatul Ismiah expressed hope that the farmers would apply the knowledge sustainably.

“I hope this training enables farmers to continuously improve the quality of their sheep, which in turn will contribute to better economic well-being for their families,” she said.

The activity received positive responses from local residents and is expected to serve as a model for similar farmer empowerment programmes in other regions. (NF/AL/PPS)
