Universitas Islam Malang’s Postgraduate Program conducted another round of dissertation defenses for students in the Multicultural Islamic Education (PAI) Doctoral Program. This time, the examinations were held at the Ali bin Abi Thalib Building, 3rd floor, on Tuesday, December 8, 2020.
In the first session, candidate Mo’tasim, S.Pd.I., M.Pd, defended his dissertation titled “Adaptation Model of Multicultural Islamic Religious Education at Miftahul Qulub Islamic Boarding School in Sustaining Interethnic and Interreligious Harmony in Polagan Village, Pamekasan.”
The examination was chaired by Unisma Rector Prof. Dr. H. Maskuri, M.Si, assisted by Prof. M. Mas’ud Said, MM., PhD. The five examiners included Prof. Dr. Imam Suprayogo, Prof. Dr. Ali Imron, M.Pd., Prof. Dr. Yaqub Cikusin, M.Pd., Prof. Dr. H. Djunaidi Ghony, and Prof. H. Junaidi Mistar, M.Pd., PhD.
The research employed a phenomenological approach, using purposive and snowball sampling methods.
Candidate Mo’tasim passed with distinction. He shared an emotional reflection on his journey, while Prof. Djunaidi Ghony offered guidance for his path ahead. Pride and joy from both his family and IAI Ibrahimy Bangkalan were evident during the group photo session that followed.

In the second session, Zainal Arifin, S.Ag., M.Pd.I, presented his dissertation, “Internalizing Multicultural Islamic Religious Education Values: A Multi-Site Study at SMAN 2 Kediri and SMAN 1 Nganjuk.”
The research used a qualitative approach combining case study methodology with a multi-site research design. His dissertation identified a range of values cultivated within the schools, including equality, empathy, justice, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, responsibility, nationalism, mutual trust, hospitality, courtesy, honesty, and compassion.
The process of internalizing these values unfolded across three stages: planning, implementation, and evaluation. Planning was aligned with each school’s vision and mission, implementation combined classroom instruction with teacher modeling, and evaluation assessed students’ academic ability, attitudes, and behavior.
This second defense was likewise chaired by Prof. Dr. H. Maskuri, M.Si, assisted by Prof. M. Mas’ud Said, PhD. The examining panel remained largely unchanged from the first session, with Prof. Junaidi, M.Pd., M.Si, replaced by Dr. M. Hanief, M.Pd.

Candidate Zainal Arifin passed with distinction as well. Family members and representatives from LP Ma’arif NU Nganjuk shared visibly in the pride of his achievement. Congratulations!
