A Success: ICOMET 2023 Officially Held by the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programs in Mathematics Education
Malang, October 7, 2023 – The Bachelor’s and Master’s Programs in Mathematics Education at Universitas Islam Malang (Unisma) successfully hosted “The 2nd International Conference on Mathematics Education and Technology” (ICOMET) 2023. The event received high praise from various parties, including the Rector of Unisma, the Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, and the Director of the Unisma Graduate School.
ICOMET 2023 adopted the main theme: “Mathematics and Its Learning in the VUCA Era: Challenges, Opportunities, and Innovations.” The era characterized by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA) presents extraordinary challenges in learning and scientific discovery, particularly in the field of mathematics.
In his opening remarks, Unisma’s Rector, Prof. Dr. H. Maskuri, M.Si, emphasized Unisma’s commitment to continuously improving quality and contributing to education and research, in line with the university’s motto, “From NU for Indonesia and World Civilization.”
He also highlighted the importance of mathematical literacy as the foundation of knowledge and future success, with mathematics playing a central role in fostering creative thinking and problem-solving skills in complex contexts.
The Director of Unisma Postgraduate Program also appreciated the convening of ICOMET 2023 as a further collaboration with various international educational and research institutions.
Previously, Unisma Postgraduate Program had established ties with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) through a visit by Prof. Dr. Parmjit Singh, A/LA.S, as well as with Khalifa University in the United Arab Emirates through a visit by the Unisma Rector to Prof. Dr. Hadi Susanto. This collaboration is expected to enrich the knowledge and experience of the ICOMET 2023 participants.

The Chair of the Organizing Committee, Dr. Sikky El Walida, M.Pd, expressed gratitude to all parties who contributed to the success of this event. He also invited all participants to jointly utilize this conference to improve the quality of mathematics education and advance the field of mathematics more broadly.
ICOMET 2023 is expected to serve as a productive platform for academics, researchers, and mathematics education practitioners to share ideas and discoveries, as well as collaborate in addressing the challenges and opportunities of the VUCA era. With a spirit of collaboration and innovation, the role of mathematics in navigating future complexities is expected to continue to evolve and provide significant benefits to society and global civilization.
