Unisma launches Mathematical Batik created by students

Malang, October 7, 2023 – Universitas Islam Malang (Unisma) celebrated Indonesia’s cultural richness by launching a unique and creative Mathematical Batik at the 2023 International Conference on Mathematics Education and Technology (ICOMET). This batik is a student’s work that combines two key elements: traditional art and mathematics.

Batik, recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, holds artistic and cultural value. Unisma enriches the batik tradition with a mathematical touch, incorporating geometric elements, numbers, and mathematical symbols into its design.

This Mathematical Batik is the result of a collaboration among mathematics education students who share a passion for both art and mathematics. They have successfully created batik that is not only aesthetically beautiful but also carries a profound message about the importance of mathematics in daily life.

This batik is the work of five undergraduate students in the Mathematics Education program: Nikmatunnajah Ummi Attiyah, Fioria Adesi Romadhona, Jimmy Putra Adi Winata, Nurul Falahah Kurnia Putri, and Sofia Azizah. The project was supervised by Dr. Surya Sari Faradiba, S.Si., M.Pd.

The Rector of Unisma, Prof. Dr. H. Maskuri, M.Si., enthusiastically welcomed the launch of this Mathematical Batik. This Mathematical Batik is tangible proof that art and mathematics can complement each other. It is a tribute to Indonesian culture and a celebration of creativity.

SIGMATICH: Batik with Mathematical Formula Motifs

This batik, named SIGMATICH, is the result of student creativity through the Student Entrepreneurship Development Program (P2MW), funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2023.

Jimmy stated, “Initially, we got the idea from the batik patterns on a rather intricate garment. We wondered what it would be like if those batik patterns were mathematical formulas, since mathematical formulas often use symbols, patterns, and geometric shapes.”

ICOMET 2023 served as the perfect platform to launch this Mathematical Batik, as the conference brought together mathematics researchers from various countries. Through this batik, Unisma aims to demonstrate to the world that Indonesia is a place where the beauty of art and mathematical ingenuity can unite in harmony. (AL/PPS)
