UNISMA Researchers Reveal Students’ Difficulties in Understanding Algebra

Peneliti UNISMA mengungkap kesulitasn pada mahasiswa dalam mempelajari aljabar

Malang, August 19, 2024 – A recent study conducted by a research team fro UNISMA highlights the difficulties faced by first-year university students in understanding algebraic concepts. The study shows that the transition from arithmetic to algebra often poses challenges for many students, particularly in comprehending variables and the proper use of the equal sign. The research emphasizes the importance of identifying and addressing algebraic misconceptions early to prevent the accumulation of conceptual errors that may hinder academic progress.

The study was led by Fadhila Kartika Sari, M.Pd and Dr. Surya Sari Faradiba, M.Pd, in collaboration with Prof. Rully Charitas Indra Prahmanda, M.Pd as the reviewer of the research publication. Using a qualitative approach and employing the Think-Aloud Protocol method, the research aimed to understand students’ cognitive processes while solving algebraic problems.

This method allows students to verbalize their thought processes while completing algebra tasks, providing deeper insight into the misconceptions they hold. The analysis revealed several common errors, including the incorrect use of operational symbols and misinterpretation of variables.

Fadhila Kartika Sari explained that by applying the Domino Theory, the research team was able to identify fundamental misconceptions that could trigger a chain of further errors. “By addressing these foundational misconceptions first, we can create a positive domino effect that improves students’ understanding across related areas,” she said. The intervention strategies developed from these findings are expected to strengthen students’ conceptual understanding and prevent the accumulation of more complex errors in the future.

The research was funded by UNISMA Institutional Grant (HI-ma), based on the Research Grant Implementation Agreement No. 089/G164/U.LPPM/K/B.07/I/2024, dated January 29, 2024. The study not only contributes significantly to the field of mathematics education but also opens opportunities for developing more effective curricula and teaching methods.

Universitas Islam Malang remains committed to supporting research aimed at improving educational quality and helping students achieve higher academic success. The findings are expected to be implemented across various educational programs to strengthen students’ overall mathematical competence.
