Universitas Islam Malang (Unisma) has once again awarded doctoral degrees in Multicultural Islamic Education (PAI), marking the graduation of its 134th and 135th doctorate recipients. Both newly conferred doctors specialise in research using multicultural approaches.
The first doctoral promotion was awarded to Irsyaddur Rofiq, who successfully defended his dissertation entitled “The Genealogy of Wasathiyah Islamic Thought of KH A. Nawawi Abd. Jalil at Sidogiri Islamic Boarding School and Its Relevance to Multicultural Islamic Education.”
The open doctoral examination was conducted before a panel of seven examiners, chaired by Unisma Rector Prof. Junaidi Mistar, M.Pd., Ph.D, and assisted by Prof. M. Mas’ud Said, M.M., Ph.D as secretary. Other examiners included Prof. Imam Suprayogo, M.Si., Prof. Maskuri, M.Si., Prof. Nur Syam, M.Si., Prof. Djunaidi Ghony, M.A., and Dr. Syamsu Madyan, Lc., M.A.
During the examination, the panel engaged in an in-depth discussion to assess the analytical depth of the candidate’s research. One significant outcome was the recommendation to revise the dissertation title from “The Genealogy of Wasathiyah Islamic Education” to “The Genealogy of Wasathiyah Islam.” The change was deemed more consistent with the dissertation’s focus on KH A. Nawawi Abd. Jalil’s Wasathiyah Islamic thought rather than educational theory.
The first examination session concluded with a prayer led by KH Abdul Mujib, caretaker of the Al-Yasini Integrated Islamic Boarding School in Pasuruan. The prayer was offered solemnly, expressing hopes that the knowledge gained by the doctoral candidates would bring greater benefit and contribute to Unisma’s continued development.

He successfully defended his dissertation entitled “The Pesantren Trilogy in Shaping Students’ Character from the Perspective of Multicultural Islamic Education at Al-Hikam Student Islamic Boarding School.”

The dissertation examines the strategic role of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in shaping students’ character through educational approaches that emphasise multicultural values. The research was supervised by Prof. H. M. Mas’ud Said, M.M., Ph.D and Prof. Djunaidi Ghony, M.A.
At the conclusion of the open examination, the results were formally announced. Irsyaddur Rofiq earned a distinction with honours, while Imam Athoir Rokhman graduated with a very satisfactory distinction.
The graduation of the two doctoral candidates further reinforces Unisma’s commitment to advancing Islamic studies that respond to contemporary challenges, particularly within Indonesia’s diverse social context. Congratulations to Dr. Irsyaddur Rofiq and Dr. Imam Athoir Rokhman 🎓
