PAI Unisma Doctoral Candidates Present Findings on Progressive Ma’had Ali and Islamic Figures Who Embody Rahmatan Lil Alamin

The doctoral examination presented research on progressive multicultural education at Ma’had Ali Salafiyah Syafi’iyah Asembagus, Situbondo. At its core, this Ma’had Ali operates similarly to Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in general, with classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning) as its primary reference — yet it is also enriched with academic courses and progressive student thinking.

Ma’had Ali Salafiyah Syafi’iyah publishes a journal called Taswirul Afkar, which features progressive ideas and writings from its students.

Implementation: The institution applies active learning methods. Evaluation is carried out through mid-year examinations (ujian nisfu sanah), end-of-year examinations (ujian akhir sanah), and a final study examination (ujian akhir dirasah), covering both process-based and summative assessments. Examinations are conducted in both written and oral formats, assessing both comprehension and reasoning. Lecturers also conduct self-evaluation throughout the learning process. Classical texts are sometimes also presented in PowerPoint format.
