PAI Doctoral Program Holds Simultaneous Closed and Open Dissertation Defenses

Unisma’s Postgraduate Program conducted both closed and open dissertation defenses simultaneously on November 29, 2021. Hasan Bisri, S.Pd.I., M.Pd.I, defended his dissertation in the open examination, while Muhammad Syaikhon underwent the closed examination.

Both closed and open dissertation defenses form part of the academic process required to earn a doctoral degree. To complete the program, students must pass a proposal examination, a closed examination, and an open examination, while also publishing at least one scholarly article in an accredited journal by their second semester at the latest.

The closed examination gives students intensive feedback on their dissertation, evaluated by a panel of six examiners who offer critique and suggestions on the work. The open examination, by contrast, involves seven examiners and is attended by family and close relatives, with public access available through Unisma Postgraduate Program’s YouTube channel.

The open examination also serves as the doctoral promotion ceremony. Following promotion, students may formally use the title of doctor once they complete the required graduation confirmation (yudisium) paperwork.
