Aan Fardani Ubaidillah, a doctoral student in Multicultural Islamic Religious Education, is researching Kiai Sableng, Abdullah SAM, the leader of Al-Amien Sumberpucung Islamic boarding school. The defense took place on February 21, 2023, in East Java Studies Center, Ali Bin Abi Tholib Building, 3rd floor.
Promovendus Aan was examined by a lecturer from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Prof. Dr. H. Ahmad Thib Raya, M.Pd, as the main examiner. Other examiners included Prof. Dr. Maskuri, M.Si, who also served as the chair of examiners, Prof. M. Mas’ud Said, MM., Ph.D, who served as the secretary of examiners, and Prof. Imam Suprayogo.
Other examiners included Prof. Yaqub Cikusin, M.Si, who also served as the supervisor, and Prof. Junaidi Mistar, Ph.D, who served as the co-supervisor. Also serving as an examiner was Prof. Djunaidi Ghony, Head of the Multicultural Islamic Education (PAI) Doctoral Program.
Aan Fardani named Kiai Abdullah SAM as a Multicultural Kiai. Abdullah SAM has received several titles from the community, including: Kiai Sableng, Kiai Jaranan, and Kiai Pencak, thus deserving to be called “Kiai of a Thousand Titles.”
The research conducted by this lecturer from Universitas Islam Raden Rahmat utilized an ethnographic study adapted from Spradley. The analysis conducted includes domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, component analysis, and cultural theme analysis.
The researcher was drawn to Kiai Abdullah SAM because his educational approach is based on community empowerment at the upstream level and religious education through Islamic boarding schools at the downstream level.
The People’s Pesantren can be described as a pesantren in the style of a Community Learning Center (PKBM), with the primary activity being the resolution of community issues. This is followed by religious education as the main objective.

Ahmad Thib Raya, serving as an examiner, suggested incorporating the competencies of a kiai according to the Sunnah. Prof. Thib recommended several hadiths that could serve as references.
Another examiner offered suggestions for improving this dissertation. Prof. Imam Suprayogo suggested adding an analysis of the struggles of “Kiai Sableng” in acquiring social capital.
The doctoral candidate, Aan Fardani Ubaidillah, was declared to have passed with the grade of “highly satisfactory.” Aan Fardani holds his second doctoral degree from Universitas Islam Malang.
