Malang, March 26, 2025 – The Doctoral Program (S3) in Multicultural Islamic Religious Education at Universitas Islam Malang has conferred two new Doctoral Degrees. Dwi Ari Kurniawati was officially recognized as the program’s 108th doctoral graduate, while Mukhlisin became the 109th. The open dissertation defense was held at 9:30 a.m. WIB at the East Java Study Center.
The session was chaired by UNISMA Rector Prof. Junaidi, M.Pd., Ph.D., who served as head of the examining board, accompanied by Prof. Mas’ud Said, M.M., Ph.D., as secretary. Other board members included senior academics Prof. Dr. Imam Suprayogo, Prof. Dr. Nur Syam, M.Si., Prof. Dr. Maskuri, M.Si., and Prof. Dr. Djunaidi Ghony.
The examination began with a presentation by promovenda Dwi Ari Kurniawati, whose dissertation, titled “Mediation of Divorce Cases in Interethnic and Interfaith Families: A Multicultural Islamic Education Perspective at the Malang Religious Court,” examined the role of mediators in resolving marital conflicts involving interfaith and interethnic couples, and how multicultural values are applied throughout the mediation process.
Promovendus Mukhlisin then defended his dissertation before the board of examiners.
Mukhlisin’s research, titled “Implementation of Multicultural Islamic Education Values in Islamic Education Learning: An Ethnographic Study at a Pesantren-Based Junior High School,” analyzed the Islamic education system in pesantren, instructional methods employed, and the role of pesantren in shaping students’ character.
Following an in-depth question-and-answer session, both candidates were declared to have passed and were formally awarded Doctoral Degrees in Islamic Education. Dwi Ari Kurniawati graduated with high distinction, while Mukhlisin graduated with distinction.
With the addition of these new doctoral graduates, UNISMA’s Multicultural Islamic Education Doctoral Program further reinforces its commitment to producing scholars and researchers who contribute to the advancement of Islamic education in Indonesia.
