Malang – The Doctoral Degree in Multicultural Islamic Education once again held an open dissertation examination, followed by a closed examination, on 29 December 2025. The open examination assessed Promovendus Zainul Hakim, S.H.I., M.H.I., while the closed examination examined A. Saefullah and Abd. Halim.
Zainul Hakim presented a dissertation entitled Multicultural Islamic Education in Shaping Competitive Student Character at Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Matholi’ul Anwar Lamongan.
In his presentation, the Promovendus conveyed research findings that enrich the scholarly thought of Prof. K.H. Tolchah Hasan on multicultural Islamic education through the addition of competitive and inclusive values.
“KH Tolchah Hasan formulated the idea that multicultural Islamic education encompasses the values of ta’aruf, tawasuth, tasamuh, and tawazun. Meanwhile, our research identified additional competitive and inclusive values within multicultural Islamic education,” he stated.

His presentation also elaborated on findings that expand John Dewey’s theory of progressive education. He introduced three additional core elements to the progressive education model: the internalisation of tolerance values based on multiculturalism, competitive collaboration, and character strengthening.
Zainul Hakim was examined by a panel of seven examiners chaired by the Rector of Universitas Islam Malang, Prof. Junaidi, M.Pd., Ph.D., and assisted by Prof. Mas’ud Said, M.M., Ph.D., as secretary. Other members of the examining board included Prof. Nur Syam, Prof. Imam Suprayogo, Prof. Dr. H. Maskuri, M.Si., Prof. Djunaidi Ghony, M.A., and Dr. Moh. Afifulloh, M.Pd.
Supervised by Prof. Dr. Maskuri, M.Si., as promoter, and Prof. Junaidi Mistar, M.Pd., Ph.D., as co-promoter, the Promovendus was declared to have passed with a very satisfactory distinction. Congratulations!
