The Central Laboratory and Halal Center (PHC) of Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA) held a two-day workshop (19–20/02) covering the fundamentals of aseptic techniques, bacterial isolation, and purification. The event represents a foundational step in developing human resources in support of UNISMA’s trajectory toward becoming a Research University.
According to UNISMA’s Vice Rector I, Prof. Drs. H. Junaidi Mistar, M.Pd., the workshop on basic aseptic techniques serves as a cornerstone for cultivating competent human resources in the areas of aseptic practice, bacterial isolation, and purification.
“This is UNISMA’s commitment to developing competent human resources, particularly for lecturers, laboratory technicians, and technical staff from the Faculty of Medicine. It is also a step along the path toward becoming a Research University,” Prof. Junaidi stated.

On the same occasion, Prof. Junaidi also expressed his hope that workshops of this nature would be held as frequently as possible and expanded in scope. The event was attended by lecturers, laboratory technicians, and technical staff from the Faculties of Medicine, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Agriculture, and Animal Husbandry, as well as representatives from Master’s students of Agriculture at Universitas Brawijaya Malang.
The workshop was facilitated by Novi Arfarita, SP, MP, MSc, Ph.D., who also serves as Head of UNISMA’s Central Laboratory and Halal Center (PHC). The first day was dedicated to the theoretical delivery of material on basic aseptic techniques and the importance of aseptic practice in microbial research and laboratory work, followed by hands-on bacterial streaking exercises using fundamental aseptic methods. The second day comprised observation of results and bacterial staining procedures to assess bacterial purity.
“It is hoped that this workshop will enhance the foundational skills of laboratory technicians, technical staff, and lecturers conducting research in this field, while also broadening their knowledge and understanding as conveyed by our resource person, Novi Arfarita, SP, MP, MSc, Ph.D., an expert who has long been immersed in the field of Microbiology, having pursued her undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Brawijaya, her Master’s degree in Thailand, and her Doctorate in Japan,” he concluded.
