Maasyiral Muslimin rahimakumullah,
Let us together express our gratitude to Allah SWT for all of His abundant blessings: the blessing of free time, the blessing of good health, the blessing of knowledge, the blessing of sustenance, and the blessing of family harmony. We are grateful for the presence of gratitude in our hearts.
We are grateful to Allah when our hearts and actions reflect this gratitude. It is a beautiful thing when our actions embody the values of gratitude.
We seek refuge in Allah from forgetfulness and negligence. We truly seek refuge in Allah from subtle ingratitude that is, failing to realize how great and numerous the blessings Allah has bestowed on us. How much Allah loves our families and our communities.
Ma’asyirol Muslimin Rahimakumullah
We are able to work, we are able to worship, we are able to enjoy freedom, all this because of other people and, of course, Allah’s blessings. We are able to work because our university exists and provides salaries and benefits thanks to our leadership. We are able to worship in peace because there are no others causing chaos. We deserve to be grateful for the tranquility of all these surroundings. Alhamdulillah.
Be grateful for the small things; there’s no need to wait for grand, fantastic things. Be grateful to others who serve as intermediaries for Allah’s blessings, for that is the teaching: “Whoever does not thank people will not thank Allah. Whoever does not appreciate the little things will not appreciate the great.”
The goodness of our families, our spouses, our children, the goodness of our country, and the good people at our university are blessings we should be grateful for. We are in Indonesia, one of the most democratic and safest Muslim nations in the world—this is something we should be grateful for.
My Muslim Brothers and Sisters, May Allah Have Mercy on You
As believers, we are advised to remain vigilant. Satan is everywhere. We could easily slip. Our attitude shapes the atmosphere of our surroundings. Patience is a form of gratitude.
The Prophets, the Messengers, the Friends of Allah, and the great scholars, these are people of patience. We ordinary people, myself included, often complain and make demands. Eventually, we forget. That is the opposite of gratitude.
No Prophet or Messenger lived without heavy burdens, yet all Prophets and Messengers were people who did not grieve over any situation. They were masters of gratitude, especially in heart and deed, not just in words. Their nobility lies in their character of gratitude.
Humans are prone to error and forgetfulness. That is why Allah has sent down guidance in every era. Allah also sent messengers, prophets, and scholars to remind us. Because we are AL INSAANU MAHALUL KHOTO’ WAN NISYAN. We often forget.
Out there, there is extreme poverty; out there, there are social hardships; yet here, we are doing just fine. FABIAYYI AALA-I ROBBIKUMA TUKADDZIBAAN. What other blessings do we have reason to deny?
One of the best things, besides being grateful for blessings, is that I urge myself to be willing to correct our mistakes, to guard our hearts, to guard ourselves, and to guard our intentions, and to avoid acting recklessly to achieve our desires.
The heroes who pioneered independence or founded our universities were not people who liked to complain, and they also failed many times in their noble endeavors; therefore, we must educate ourselves to be brave in our struggles. As Gus Dur said, “Life is a struggle; every struggle requires sacrifice, and every great sacrifice yields great reward.”
Success, both in the past and today, is never achieved easily. No pain, no gain. There is struggle and prayer involved.
Even Imam Syafii RA always reminded us that there is no joy in life without prior hardship. Anything obtained easily, especially by taking away or diminishing others’ rights can lose its blessings.
In truth, we may have already been given the best, given so much, yet sometimes we are the ones who fail to be grateful for it.
Surah An-Nahl, verse 18: “And if you were to count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”
Research by psychologists also reveals that this sense of gratitude brings people closer to happiness. The study states, “It is not the abundance of wealth, possessions, or status that is the sole means of happiness.” Rather, happiness begins with a sense of peace regarding what Allah has bestowed upon us.
In closing, I urge myself personally and all of you here to fulfill our responsibilities as an expression of gratitude:
First, the responsibility to show love, sincerity, and generosity, and to fulfill our duties toward ourselves, our families, children, wives, husbands, and especially our parents.
Second; the responsibility as a creature and servant of Allah, toward Allah SWT to carry out His commands and avoid His prohibitions. The highest form of gratitude is gratitude in action.
Third: social responsibility toward neighbors and relatives, especially those in need, by sharing even if the contribution is small. Social responsibility, Zakat, Infaq, and Shadaqah are the ways to fulfill this.
Fourth: responsibility toward the nation and state, fostering harmony as an expression of gratitude.
Fifth; responsibility toward nature and the environment through love for nature and its protection. Caring for the universe and loving humanity and nature are its manifestations.
May Allah SWT always bestow His guidance, grace, and protection upon us.
