UNISMA’s Postgraduate Program held two open doctoral examination sessions in a single day on Wednesday, 2 September 2020. This agenda forms part of a series of requirements that candidates must fulfil before being conferred a doctoral degree, having previously completed a proposal examination, a supervision process, and a closed dissertation defense.
The first open examination was presented by Sugiyar, S.Ag., M.Pd.I., who defended a dissertation titled “Multicultural Dimensions in Islamic Religious Education at State Vocational High School 1 Geger Madiun and Al-Islam Joresan Vocational High School, Ponorogo.”

Four foundational findings on the dimensions of multicultural education were identified in the study. First, prejudice reduction was implemented through the study of Qur’anic verses, Hadith, and classical Islamic texts (kitab), as well as the application of institutional regulations both online and manually. Second, the knowledge construction process in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) employed contextual and scientific approaches.
The third finding concerned the integration of PAI subject matter based on the integration of four competencies: spiritual, social, knowledge, and skills. The fourth finding addressed educational equity, implemented through both academic and non-academic interactions. The final finding relates to cultural empowerment, in which the culture in question is grounded in core and supporting values.
The first open examination session lasted approximately three hours, followed by a break for prayer and lunch (ishoma) before the second session commenced at 13:00.
The second open examination session featured Ali Ahmad Yenuri, S.Pd.I., M.Pd.I., who defended his doctoral dissertation titled “The Inclusivism of Religious-Ethical Concepts in the Learning Communication of Islamic Religious Education at Setia Budi Elementary School, Gresik, and State Elementary School Sukoharjo, Kediri.”

The study, employing a combined research approach, yielded three key findings. First, a concept of religious ethics exists within the learning communication of PAI at both institutions. Second, communication manifested three characteristics: mutual understanding among actors, flexibility in learning communication, and the display of both social and ritual communication forms. The final finding revealed the presence of inclusivity values within the religious-ethical concepts embedded in PAI subject matter.
As is standard for open doctoral examinations, both candidates were examined by a panel of seven examiners. Prof. Dr. Maskuri, M.Si., UNISMA Rector, served as Panel Chair and concurrent Co-Promotor for both candidates. Prof. M. Mas’ud Said, Ph.D., Postgraduate Program Director, served as Examination Secretary. The remaining five examiners were Prof. Dr. Imam Suprayogo, Prof. Dr. Imron Arifin, M.Pd., Prof. Yaqub Cikusin, M.Si., Prof. Djunaidi, Ph.D., Prof. Dr. Umi Sumbulah, and Prof. Dr. Djunaidi Ghony — Head of the Doctoral Program in Multicultural Islamic Religious Education and concurrent Promotor for both candidates.
