On 23 June 2020, at precisely 11:00 WIB, an open doctoral promotion examination was held for Multicultural Islamic Religious Education program, Suparwan presented as the doctoral candidate. The session was conducted in KH Masjkur Examination Chamber, Abu Bakar As-Shiddiq Building, 4th Floor.
As with the preceding examination, the session was opened by the Chair of Panel and concurrent Promotor, Prof. Dr. H. Maskuri, M.Si. The Rector of Universitas Islam Malang reiterated the protocols governing examination proceedings under the New Normal era, including the restriction on the number of attendees and the live streaming of the session on UNISMA Public Relations YouTube channel.

The doctoral promotion session continued with the candidate’s presentation of his dissertation titled “Multicultural Islamic Education: A Multi-Site Study of the Learning Process at State Primary Schools 1 and 2 Medowo, Kandangan District, Kediri Regency.”
Several key findings were identified in the research. First, the components of Multicultural Islamic Education learning can be implemented through a series of processes involving religious education teachers and all students. Second, the implementation of Multicultural Islamic Education learning process is observable in students’ daily lives and school activities. Third, the model of Multicultural Islamic Education learning process implementation encompasses the cultivation of multicultural traditions, the observance of religious holidays at school, and the active involvement of students, teachers, parents, religious figures, and the wider community.
The candidate conveyed that the research aims to describe, analyse, and interpret the components of Multicultural Islamic Education learning process and its corresponding model, employing a qualitative research method with a multi-site approach.
The open examination featured six additional examiners: Prof. H. M. Mas’ud Said, Ph.D., who also served as examination secretary; Prof. Dr. H. Imam Suprayogo; Prof. Dr. H. Mulyadi, M.PdI.; Prof. Dr. H. Djunaidi Ghony; Dr. H. M. Hanief, M.Pd., who concurrently served as co-promotor; and Prof. Dr. H. Nur Syam, M.Si., Professor at the Faculty of Da’wah and Communication, UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, who participated virtually via Zoom teleconference.
The examination panel raised several notes for the improvement and refinement of the candidate’s dissertation, covering both technical and substantive aspects of academic writing particularly with regard to research consistency and several points requiring further elaboration.
The open examination, which lasted approximately two hours, culminated in the candidate being awarded Cum Laude honours, making Dr. Suparwan the 22nd Doctor conferred by Universitas Islam Malang. Congratulations, Dr. Suparwan, M.PdI! (NAD/AL/PPS)
