Yesterday (16/06), Postgraduate Program of Universitas Islam Malang, through its Doctoral Program in Multicultural Islamic Religious Education, once again convened an open doctoral promotion session. The examination promoted Uswatun Hasanah, S.PdI., M.PdI., who defended her dissertation titled “Islamic Religious Education in Seninan and Selosoan Traditions in the Development of Multicultural Attitudes within the Community.”
Unlike previous open examinations, this session was conducted in accordance with New Normal health protocols to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The organising committee designed a more compact event format fewer attendees with safe distancing observed and broadcast the proceedings via live streaming on the UNISMA Public Relations YouTube channel.
The session commenced precisely at 08:00 WIB. The candidate presented at least three key findings from her research. First, the Islamic educational values embedded in the seninan and selosoan traditions are rooted in the legacy of Kyai Soleh, actualised in both textual and contextual dimensions.
Second, the process of Islamic Religious Education within the seninan and selosoan traditions is carried out through two modes of learning: a Sufi (tasawuf) approach as a means of nurturing ritual worship, and the implementation of integrated social activities as a vehicle for developing multicultural attitudes.
Third, the model of Islamic Religious Education taught within the seninan and selosoan traditions for the development of multicultural attitudes in the community is implemented through a transformative-transcendental approach.
Hasanah’s research is a phenomenological study employing a qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews and observation.
The examination was conducted before a panel of seven examiners, chaired by Prof. Dr. Maskuri, M.Si., who also served as Examiner 4. The UNISMA Rector noted that the open examination was proceeding in accordance with standard operating procedures in order to accelerate students’ study completion. Prof. M. Mas’ud Said, MM., Ph.D., served as examination secretary and concurrent Examiner 3. Prof. Dr. Imam Suprayogo served as Examiner 1; Prof. Zumrotul Mukaffa, M.Ag., Professor of Islamic Education at Universitas Islam Negeri Surabaya, as Examiner 2; Prof. Djunaidi Ghony as Examiner 3; Prof. Dr. Yaqub Cikusin, M.Si., who also served as Promotor; and Prof. Dr. Dahlan Tamrin, M.Ag., serving as Examiners 6 and 7 respectively.

Throughout the session, the panel acknowledged that Hasanah’s research topic was highly compelling. Several recommendations were also offered to further strengthen the dissertation among them, a suggestion regarding the choice of the terms seninan and selosoan, which were considered insufficiently universal in scope. Hasanah, for her part, demonstrated a strong command of her subject matter, responding to the panel’s questions with clarity and confidence.

The session lasted approximately two hours, and concluded with Hasanah being conferred as the 19th Doctor of Multicultural Islamic Religious Education from UNISMA’s Doctoral Program.
