Prof. Ted Yuchung Liu expressed his pleasure and honour being invited by Universitas Islam Malang and conveyed his appreciation for the opportunity to share insights on academic publication. “I truly enjoy the collaboration between UNISMA and NPTU,” he remarked.
The professor in the field of education also expressed his hope that the friendship between UNISMA and NPTU would continue to grow stronger. “I hope the cooperation between National Pingtung University and UNISMA will last forever,” he said.
Lecture on Research and Scientific Publication
Prof. Ted Yuchung Liu explained the process of research and scientific publication in a simple and accessible manner. He noted that the term research carries different meanings in academic and non-academic contexts. For example, when someone says, “Before going to Malang, I researched Malang’s traditional food,” this meaning differs significantly from research in the academic world.
Research in academia also varies in methodology. In the social sciences, qualitative approaches are often able to provide deeper insights, although quantitative methods continue to play an important role in presenting empirical realities within social science research.

In the realm of publication, Prof. Ted emphasized the importance of “befriending journals,” meaning understanding a journal’s focus and scope as well as its house style. He explained that rejection does not necessarily indicate poor quality writing; rather, it may reflect a mismatch between the article’s theme or style and the journal’s preferences.
Prof. Ted further explained that scientific articles generally fall into three categories: empirical studies, literature reviews, and theory articles. Empirical studies present scientific evidence using specific methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative. Literature reviews summarize and analyze existing research to identify trends and draw conclusions. Meanwhile, theory articles reframe ideas through interdisciplinary perspectives, potentially generating new viewpoints or theories.
