Universitas Islam Malang conferred five new doctoral degrees in Multicultural Islamic Education (PAI) throughout February 2021, following a series of open dissertation defenses for candidates whose research had been deemed ready for final examination.
The open defenses were held three times over the course of the month. On February 17, Zainuddin and Ahmad Fauzi were examined. On February 19, Ainul Halim defended his dissertation. And on February 27, Romadhon Chotib and Solchan Ghozali both defended theirs.
Candidate Zainuddin’s dissertation, “The Spirit of Multicultural Islamic Education in Building Communal Tolerance in Kedungrejo Village, Rowokangkung, and Tunjungrejo Village, Yosowilangun, Lumajang,” examined how tolerance takes shape at the community level.
Ahmad Fauzi presented his dissertation, “Implementing Multicultural Values in Islamic Religious Education: A Multi-Site Study at Darul Hikmah Boarding School, MAN 1 Malang, and Al-Qolam Boarding School, MAN 2 Malang.” He passed with a satisfactory distinction.
Ainul Halim presented his dissertation, “The Spirit of Islamic Educational Values in Interfaith Harmony in Windu Village, Karangbinangun District, Lamongan.”
Chotib defended his dissertation, “Tolerant Behavior in Multicultural Islamic Education at East Java’s Nahdlatul Ulama Bahtsul Masail Institution,” conducted using an ethnographic qualitative approach.
Solchan Ghozali defended his dissertation, “Islamic Leadership in Building Religious Tolerance in Balun Village, Turi District, Lamongan Regency.” He becomes a new doctoral graduate now serving at Unsuri Surabaya.
Unisma’s Rector expressed hope that the university’s doctoral graduates would go on to serve the institutions where they teach, emphasizing that earning a doctorate carries an ongoing responsibility to keep innovating so that those institutions can continue to advance.
