Saifuddin, S.Pd.I., M.A., presented his research findings on Multicultural Values in Islamic Religious Education during his dissertation defense for Doctoral Program in Multicultural Islamic Religious Education. The defense, which took place on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, was held in KH Masjkur Conference Room on 4th floor of Abu Bakar As-Shiddiq Building.
The defense was chaired by Prof. Dr. H. Maskuri, M.Si, Rector of Universitas Islam Malang, and assisted by Prof. M. Mas’ud Said, MM., Ph.D, Director of Postgraduate Program, who served as secretary of the panel. The board of examiners consisted of Prof. Dr. Imam Suprayogo, Prof. Dr. Umi Sumbulah, Prof. Dr. Djunaidi Ghony, Prof. Dr. Maskuri, M.Si, who also served as chair of the session, Prof. Mas’ud Said, MM., Ph.D, Prof. Dr. Yaqub Cikusin, M.Si as the supervisor, and Dr. Hasan Busri, M.Pd as the co-supervisor.

Saifuddin’s research focuses on the role of kiai (Islamic scholars) as agents in the development of multicultural values at Amanatul Ummah Islamic Boarding School in Pacet, Mojokerto. The researcher employed a qualitative approach using the phenomenological method. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation.

The researcher presented three key findings. First: the multicultural values developed at Amanatul Ummah Islamic Boarding School. Second, the role of kiai as architects of multicultural value development. Third, the model for developing multicultural values by kiai.
The defense lasted 2.5 hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. WIB. During the defense, a discussion took place between the examiners and the doctoral candidate. The examiners asked about several important aspects of the research, such as the theories used, research methods, research techniques, research results, and the development model based on existing models.

After the defense concluded, doctoral candidate Saifuddin, S.Pd.I., MA, was declared to have passed with a “satisfactory” grade. The doctoral candidate is entitled to use the doctoral degree in accordance with applicable laws and regulations following the graduation ceremony, which is scheduled to take place this coming August.

Joy also filled the doctoral candidate’s family; his wife and mother were also in attendance. In fact, the chairperson of the foundation where the doctoral candidate teaches was also present at this open defense. The doctoral candidate teaches at Majapahit Islamic University (UNIM), led by Dr. H. Rachman Sidharta Arisandi and supported by the Bakri Adnan Zain Foundation, chaired by Mrs. Dewi Masyitoh.
