Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA) has successfully secured a place among the top 10 universities in East Java. This achievement is based on the release of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture, on the clustering of Indonesian higher education institutions for 2020.
According to the release, UNISMA ranked 44th out of a total of 2,136 higher education institutions across Indonesia placing it within Cluster 2 of the national clustering framework. This marks a significant leap from its previous ranking of 85th in the same clustering exercise in 2019.
On the basis of this clustering, UNISMA also secured a position among the top 10 universities in East Java, alongside Universitas Airlangga, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Negeri Malang, Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Universitas Kristen Petra, Universitas Jember, Universitas Surabaya, and Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. This places the Malang-based campus among the top three private universities in East Java Province.

The primary purpose of the clustering framework is to provide a foundation for the formulation of development and institutional guidance policies, while encouraging universities to continuously improve the quality of their implementation of the Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi (the three pillars of higher education). Additionally, university clustering serves to provide the general public with reliable information on the performance quality of higher education institutions across Indonesia.
Information on Indonesian university performance is identified based on four key aspects. The first is the quality of human resources and students (input), encompassing indicators such as the percentage of doctoral-qualified lecturers, the percentage of lecturers holding senior lecturer and professorial positions, the student-to-lecturer ratio, the number of international students, and the number of lecturers working as industry practitioners for a minimum of six months.

The second aspect concerns institutional governance (process), comprising nine indicators. The third aspect addresses short-term performance outcomes (output), with four indicators pertaining to university outputs. The fourth and final aspect covers long-term performance outcomes (outcome), consisting of five indicators.
