National Seminar Marks East Java’s 76th Anniversary with “Smart Province” Vision

On Monday, October 18, 2021, East Java Studies Center and Universitas Islam Malang (Unisma) launched the Journal of East Java Studies (JPSJT) website and East Java Studies Center website, part of a broader series of events marking East Java Province’s 76th anniversary.

The event drew notable attendees, including Chairman of Indonesia’s Press Council Prof. M. Nuh, DEA; East Java Governor Dra. Khofifah Indar Parawansa, M.Si, joining virtually; Special Staff to the Ministry of Communication and Informatics Prof. Henry Subyakto; and Head of East Java’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Dr. Dadang Hardiwan, S.Si., M.Si.

Also present were Unisma Rector Prof. H. Maskuri, M.Si; Postgraduate Director Prof. H. M. Mas’ud Said, MM., PhD; regional agency leaders; and Unisma faculty and students, attending both in person and via Zoom at KH. M. Tolchah Hasan Auditorium, Round Building, Universitas Islam Malang, Dinoyo, Lowokwaru, Malang City.

The event opened with remarks from Unisma Rector Prof. Maskuri, M.Si, who extended congratulations on East Java Provincial Government’s 76th anniversary and expressed gratitude for the Governor’s trust in partnering with Unisma to establish an educational studies center for the province. He also stressed the need to identify which sectors require priority revitalization first, given the economic pressures lingering from the pandemic.

Governor Khofifah followed with her own remarks. “Alhamdulillah, this year’s East Java anniversary has drawn a genuinely positive response from communities across the province. I’m truly delighted,” the Governor said.

She called on academics, particularly those across East Java’s universities, to contribute their expertise and ideas toward the province’s development. She also raised the need for strategic preparation ahead of 2030, when Indonesia is projected to become the world’s sixth-largest economy, pointing specifically to strengthened data collaboration between BPS and the Communication and Information Office to help build a genuinely smart province, boost East Java’s economy, and advance numerous related priorities.

The event then moved into presentations from featured speakers, beginning with Press Council Chairman Prof. M. Nuh, DEA, who outlined the preparation and strategic steps necessary for building a smart province.

The second speaker, Ministry of Communication and Informatics Special Staff Prof. Henry Subyakto, addressed digital transformation and technology, along with the importance of cross sector collaboration.

The third speaker, BPS East Java Head Dr. Dadang Hardiwan, S.Si., M.Si, presented statistical data covering East Java’s economic growth structure and pace, poverty and extreme poverty figures, the Human Development Index, the province’s leading economic sectors, and several other key indicators.

The event proceeded smoothly and closed with a prayer led by Dr. Pardiman, concluding around 4:00 PM. (AFB/AL/PPS)
